CLEVELAND, OH, March 5, 2008 – The Lubrizol Corporation (NYSE: LZ), has developed two Estane® Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) grades with improved chemical resistance, specifically for use with E85. These two new grades support Lubrizol’s commitment to be the technical leader through innovation.
“While most of the E85 effort is currently on commercial fuel storage, a trend is developing to include military alternative fuel applications as well,” said Ralf Huther, Estane TPU Marketing Manager. E85 is a motor fuel that contains 85% ethanol and just 15% gasoline, making it a popular fuel choice due to the reduced emissions and the national push for energy independence.
Estane® Engineered Polymers is meeting these demands with Estane X-1351 TPU and Estane X-1352 TPU. Both grades are not only suitable for E85 but also for jet fuel, diesel and biodiesel exposure. “They also provide improved hydrolysis resistance, which is important since some of the fuels contain water, and there can be environmental exposure as well,” said Huther. Estane TPUs provide superior flexibility and strength through a broad range of temperatures, including sub-zero, as well as excellent adhesion to common fabrics and various substrates.
- Estane X-1351 TPU is a 95A Ester-based TPU that provides up to an 80% reduction in E85 permeability compared to a similar Ester grade.
- Estane X-1352 TPU is a 62D Ester-based TPU with up to a 95% reduction in E85 permeability.
Estane TPUs are known for there superior abrasion, wear, tear and puncture resistance compared to conventional materials such as rubber or PVC materials, making Estane TPU ideal for applications such as collapsible fuel tanks, fuel hoses, vapor recovery components, secondary containment, floating tanks, tank liners and sensors.
